Introduction to Prevention Ethics

This training describes the six principles in the Prevention Code of Ethics, using realistic examples to enhance your understanding. It also introduces a decision-making process to help you apply this code to various ethical dilemmas.

The Advanced Ethics in Prevention course was originally developed under the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s (SAMHSA’s) Center for the Application of Prevention Technologies task order (reference #HHSS283201200024I/HHSS28342002T). This updated 2024 version was created by the Great Lakes Prevention Technology Transfer Center, funded by SAMHSA under cooperative agreement #1H79SP081002-06.
Advanced Prevention Ethics
This advanced course builds upon the foundational ethics training, diving deeper into ethical challenges within prevention work. Participants will refine their ability to assess and apply ethical standards in complex situations, with a focus on leadership and supervisory roles.

Refresh understanding of the Prevention Code of Ethics
Examine ethical issues related to prevention topics

Individuals who have completed the Foundations in Prevention Ethics course
Experienced prevention professionals

Time: 8:45 AM – 4:15 PM
Cost: $115 (includes training, participant materials, and lunch)
Minimum Attendance: 15 participants
Certification Credit: These trainings satisfy the required hours for Prevention Ethics under MCBAP for Certified Prevention Specialist (CPS) or Certified Prevention Consultant (CPC) certification.

Meet the Trainers

Louise Montag
Louise Montag, CPC, is a public health pro with a passion for substance misuse prevention. As Senior Consultant at Montag Forward Solutions LLC, she helps prevention professionals level up through training and strategic guidance. A former Executive Director at Prevention Network, she’s led community initiatives and created key resources for the field. With awards like Prevention Specialist of the Year under her belt, she’s all about building strong leaders and sustainable organizations. When she’s not working, you’ll find her traveling with her husband, staying active, or spoiling her two dogs.

Kim Thalison
Kim Thalison is the Director of School Wellness and Prevention Services at Eaton Regional Education Service Agency. She manages a department focused on Whole Child services to a regional area with programs that include truancy intervention, case management for young parents, parenting classes, health curriculum access and training, sexual health education training and technical support, McKinney Vento, and substance use disorder prevention coalitions. She has worked in the field of Prevention for more than 20 years and serves as the vice chairperson for the Board of Directors for the Michigan Certification Board for Addiction Professionals (MCBAP) and is the co-chair of the MCBAP Prevention Workgroup.

Lisa Fockler
Lisa Fockler is the Executive Director of the Genesee County Prevention Coalition in Flint, Michigan. With 25 years in public health, she founded Remedy Exchange, Inc. to help individuals reach their full potential. Lisa is passionate about supporting those struggling with mental health and substance use issues, grounded in best practices and prevention science. She holds a Bachelor’s in Public Health Education and is a Certified Prevention Consultant (CPC) and Master Certified Health Education Specialist (MCHES). Lisa collaborates with local, state, and national organizations on strategic planning, coalition development, and training. She is also a certified trainer for SAPST, Prevention Ethics, and Mental Health First Aid. In her personal time Lisa enjoys spending time with family and friends “Up North”, gardening and traveling.
